2015 Priorities

The RHINO members have spoken.  Thanks for your participation.

Here's what you told RHINO in round one

Twenty six RHINO members responded to the round 1 survey of RHINO priorities. Here's the results (with some comment).

2014 priorities to consider for continuation in 2015. (these got more than 2/3 of votes cast to continue.)

  • Researching tenant civil rights issues: including banning, surveillance, guest policies, nuisance property laws

  • Researching tenant screening services and blacklisting issues.

  • Highlight the problem of rent burden and the practical consequences of rent increases.

  • Broadening the RHINO member base

  • Continue to support efforts to stop SB 349 and follow up bills that would restrict fair housing in Ohio

Your comments on 2014 priorities.

  • Efforts at addressing smoke free mf housing were lackluster at best.

  • So many issues, so little time!!! All of the issues are important but I realize we cannot fight everything all the time. Having grassroots effort at the local level is where I would like to concentrate my effort. That is not to say I would join in a letter campaign or storming the state house.

  • "RE: HUD reorganization - address on a case by case

  • RE: Bedbug issues - monitor cases to see if problems are specific to certain areas and/or certain owners/managers. Pest control businesses have already determined ""best practices"" to get rid of them and prevent re-infestation. Landlords/management just don't want to spend that much money. Health departments don't consider them a health threat which makes it more difficult." (SW: sounds like some involvement around bed bug issues...just not the "best practices" approach.)

  • HB 297 housing & Employment protections for DV victims (SW: sounds like a new priority to add to the 2015 list)

  • Lead ordinances and abatement in rental prpeeties (SW: we'll put this on the list for 2015.)

  • Don't we have any people with disabilities who are active members of RHINO??? There are 5 individual housing complexes in NE Ohio that are built for people in wheelchairs. Do they get RHINO??? (SW: I'm not sure what this means...could the voter contact me to help explain?)

Ideas for 2015 (you get to vote for these in round 2 voting; it appears that no one suggested a priority under the "other" tab.)

Other comments on 2015 goals

  • need more effort to reach out to tenants groups, more on the ground activity. (SW-I think this falls under the priority "Broaden the RHINO membership base")

  • "see above if HB 297 does not pass in lame duck. Same for all other legislative proposals not passed (SW-we'll add extending VAWA protections to all housing to the list of potential RHINO priorities.)

  • BTW, the answers were too cute. I did not get them either". (SW-Agreed. I got the message!)

  • We need to find a way to do a Check & Balance on the administration. We have one for sure that has everyone scared and running the show. No way of getting to HER BOSS! Everyone has a boss and they should ALL be able to be contacted. This may even already be I place but I am not aware. Perhaps other tenants would like the info as well. (SW-Please feel free to share the info with your on line community or with me directly.)

  • Managers should be more aware of tenants needs, if there are rules or regulations in the lease they should require that they be upheld. Example: if it is a loading and unloading area and where emergency vehicles are to have access why allow certain people who have a designated parking place--park there all the time and then tell others they are not allow to park there.
